Mountain Bike Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Mauka)

These routes are scenic, entry-level mountain biking routes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (mauka) to nowhere. Ride out, take pictures, enjoy the day and your company. There is an assent on pavement to get to the upper ones.  Each ride meanders through grasslands, shady koa groves, or open lava fields. Per HVNP brochure descriptions from 2012, routes are as follows.

  • Mauna Loa Corral | 1.5 mi. one-way
Begin this ride at the Kipukapauuu picnic area. This maintained, fairly flat, grassy truck trail will take you to the tree molds area.
  • Mauna Loa Spur Road | 0.8 mi. one-way
This quaint dirt and rock trail starts at a boulder-lined pullout 4 miles from Highway 11. Enjoy this short down and back ride. *I think this route starts at a yellow gate that you can go around. A ranger told me this, so I think we’re good.
  • Mauna Loa Six Tanks Road | 0.3 mi. one-way
This hard-to-find road begins 0.4 mi above the spur road on the right. It is often overgrown with thick grass making biking difficult. *HMM, is it a route or not?
  • Mauna Loa Powerline Road | 1.5 mi. one-way
Prepare for a technical, bt fun downhill ride. Start this route at the second cattle guard (5.8 mi. from Highway 11). The north spur is 0.25 mi while the south spur is 1.5 mi long. Both routes traverse a rugh, bumpy road that requires your full attention.
