Ride in Hilo: Sunset Ridge – Mohouli Extension

Easy route, good for kids, and there are waterfall and mountian views. Sunset Ridge subdivision with or without the Mohouli Extension is the perfect entry-level route. You don’t ‘go anywhere’ but you get some saddle time. Might be a perfect weekday commitment, your go-to training circuit, or a nice slow recovery ride. Your choice: end a good ride; start a slow ride; enjoy time with your kids, friends, family; or take a solo moment to think.

Sunset Ridge subdivision has a wide street that loops through the neighborhood. With very little traffic this route is a perfect place to break into cycling. There’s a small hill, you can loop it to get longer distance and it you don’t have to pay too much attention.  Mohouli Extension also has very wide shoulders and a good sprint opportunity. The traffic here is busier, but the shoulders are plenty wide, even for kids.  If it rains, you’ll find water flowing. If it’s clear, there’s a beautiful view of the mountain.
